F&O in simple words

No jargon, no maths homework. Read eight short cards, then play Up or Down?, a quick game where you buy pretend calls and puts. Everything here is practice money.

1

What is NIFTY?

NIFTY is a scoreboard for India's 50 biggest companies. When most of them do well, NIFTY goes up. When they do badly, it goes down. It moves every second while the market is open, from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm.

2

An option is a booking ticket

Imagine paying โ‚น100 to book a cricket bat at today's price for a week. If the price shoots up, your booking is worth a lot. If it falls, you just let the booking go and lose only the โ‚น100. An option works the same way.

3

CALL means "I think it goes UP"

Buy a call when you think NIFTY will rise. The higher it goes, the more your call is worth.

๐Ÿ“ˆ CALL = UP๐Ÿ“‰ PUT = DOWN

4

PUT means "I think it goes DOWN"

Buy a put when you think NIFTY will fall. The further it falls, the more your put is worth. Puts are also used like insurance by people who own shares.

5

The premium is the ticket price

The money you pay for an option is called the premium. If you are wrong, the most a buyer can lose is this premium. Sellers collect the premium but can lose much more, so beginners start by buying.

6

Break-even: beat the ticket price

Being right is not enough. NIFTY must move more than what you paid. Paid 40 points for a call? NIFTY must rise more than 40 points before you make a profit. This line is called the break-even.

7

Time melts your ticket

An option is like an ice cream in the sun: it melts a little every minute even if nothing happens. On expiry day it melts fastest. Traders call this theta, or time decay.

8

Futures are a promise

A future is a promise to buy or sell later at a price fixed today. No ticket price, so every point up or down is your full profit or loss. Bigger risk both ways, so learn options first.

โš–๏ธ Three golden rules. 1. Decide your exit (stop loss) before you enter. 2. Never risk more than you can afford to lose: practise here first. 3. Remember: SEBI found that about 9 in 10 people who traded F&O lost money. Learning is the edge.

Up or Down?

Look at the chart. Buy a CALL if you think NIFTY will go up in the next 10 minutes, or a PUT if you think it will go down. Each ticket costs 40 coins. You win 1 coin for every point NIFTY moves your way. Start with 500 coins.
